Creating Your Cosy Meditation Space- perfect for Winter Meditation
Winter has a way of slowing us down, inviting us to find solace and stillness within the comfort of our homes. The seasons guide us to what we need most with introspection, rest and restoration being the order of Winter. I find creating space in the comfort and sanctuary of home helps to evoke feelings of cosiness and hygge. As the chilly winds and shorter days approach, there’s no better time to transform a corner of your living space into a warm and inviting area to aid in meditation. Join me on this journey as we explore the art of creating a cosy Winter meditation space that radiates cosy comfort.
Quick Summary
- Find a cosy space and make it your own with cushions, blankets, candles or fairy lights and scents such as, seasonal aromatherapy or incense.
- Consider nature inspired Winter themed decorations, such as pinecones or evergreen branches to help ground.
- Prepare yourself a warm drink, perhaps herbal tea or cacao and set the intention for your practice.
1. Choosing the Perfect Corner
In an area of my home, I’ve discovered a little area where I sit within the warmth of Winter sunlight. Find a space that resonates with you, perhaps a quiet corner with a view of the frosty outdoors. On a dull day, I may use candles or fairy lights to create a warming ambience. Consider the following when selecting your meditation spot:
- Natural Light: Embrace the soft glow of winter daylight to aid your meditation experience.
- Comfortable Seating: Invest in a meditation cushion, chair or mat where you can be truly comfortable/seated to absorb the practice.
2. Layering with Soft Textures
When creating an appealing warm Winter space, use cosy layers. For example, surround yourself with soft textures (blankets, oversized knits and cosy socks) that evoke a sense of comfort and warmth. Experiment with:
- Throws and Blankets: Drape a faux fur or knitted blanket over yourself and your meditation seat for added warmth.
- Cushions: Pile up cushions in different textures and hues for extra comfort and to aid in positioning for your practice.
3. Warm Colour Palette
Colours can significantly impact our mood and energy. During the Winter months, embrace a warm and soothing colour palette to create a serene atmosphere. Consider:
- Earthy Tones: Rich browns, deep greens, and warm greys can add depth to your space.
- Neutral tones: Incorporate neutral accents to bring a touch of calm. These can be layered for depth and textures mixed.
4. Mood-Enhancing Lighting
As the daylight wanes, lighting becomes a crucial element in maintaining the cosy ambience of your meditation space. Experiment with:
- Candles: Choose scented aromatherapy candles with calming fragrances like lavender or sandalwood to aid in your meditation. Make sure you use good quality candles made with soy wax or beeswax.
- Fairy Lights or String Lights: A personal favourite – which you will know if you have been to any of my classes! Create a magical atmosphere with gentle twinkling lights to help you switch off and enter a cosy place of calm.
5. Personal Touches
Infuse your winter meditation space with elements that resonate with you personally. Consider adding:
- Aromatherapy Diffuser: Introduce scents like lavender, patchouli or sandalwood for a holistic experience.
- Personal Mementoes: Display items that hold sentimental value to make the space uniquely yours.
- Winter affirmation cards: You may wish to write some Winter affirmation cards, to set your practise intention deeply in affirmation.
6. Winter-Themed Decorations
Celebrate the season by incorporating subtle winter-themed decorations into your meditation space:
- Pinecones and Evergreen Branches: Bring a touch of the outdoors inside. A personal favourite, in keeping with many of my seasonal classes. The experience of gathering these items to use in your practice can be a wonderfully mindful experience in itself.
- Festive Ornaments: Select ornaments that align with the Winter season without overwhelming the space.
- Meditation/mindfulness/affirmation cards: These can bring ideas and awareness to your practice.
Conclusion
As Winter unfolds, let your meditation space become a sanctuary that embraces the season’s calm and stillness. By blending cosy materials, soft lighting and soothing colours, along with your own personal touches, you’ll create a haven where you can reconnect with yourself amidst the Winter chill. Transforming a corner into a cosy meditation space is not just about decorating; it’s about crafting an intimate retreat that nurtures your well-being. This can really help to bring a welcome and consistent habit. So, grab a cup of herbal tea or cacao, wrap yourself in a blanket, and let the Winter meditation journey begin.
