Creating calm- tips for Winter mindfulness and meditation
As the Winter winds weave their intricate dance outside my window, I find solace in the art of meditation. Winter, with its hushed landscapes and crisp frosts, presents a unique canvas for cultivating inner calm. Join me as I share my tips for Winter meditation and mindfulness. Let’s embark on a journey together to discover the profound serenity that lies within the stillness of the season.
1- Find your Winter sanctuary
As the seasons shift, so can our meditation spaces. Whilst we don’t need to be anywhere fancy or special to meditate, we can always find our individual meditation place within wherever we are, Winters backdrop can be used to create a special space for meditation. It can create a lovely atmosphere to find a seasonal Wintery space to embrace the season, if we have the opportunity. Embrace the quiet beauty of Winter by finding a serene spot, be it by a frost-kissed window or nestled amidst nature’s snow-covered trees. Allow the tranquil backdrop of Winter to enhance your meditation experience if possible.
2- Use your breath as an anchor
In the quiet stillness of Winter, the breath can create a steady anchor for meditation. I focus on each inhale and exhale, noticing the temperature of the air on the in breath. Allowing the cool winter air to cleanse my mind, clearing on every out breath. This awareness of the breath brings a sense of calm and centres the mind. This creates tranquillity within and can mirror and reflect the tranquillity and stillness of Winter. This allows us to rest and recharge ready for growth ahead. Inhale deeply, feeling the crispness fill your lungs, then exhale, releasing any tension. Let each breath become in tune with the winter theme, cultivating a sense of calm within.
3- A snowflake visualisation
As I meditate, I visualise each thought as a delicate, intricate snowflake. Picture each thought as a delicate snowflake, gently falling and dissolving into the stillness. Really noticing their unique beauty and detail. I watch them fall gently, acknowledging their presence without attachment. This visualisation not only deepens my meditation but also helps to instil a sense of lightness, much like the weightless descent of snowflakes. This can help us when letting go of any thoughts which no longer serve us and creating peace within. Peace within can be so special to create in Winter, whilst the weather may be unsettled and stormy. We can create a peace within, embracing gratitude for all of the individual seasons.
Picture each thought as a delicate snowflake, gently falling and dissolving into the stillness. This visualisation not only deepens your meditation but also adds a touch of winter magic and nature connection, creating space for a clearer, calmer mind.
4- Create a cosy space for meditation
Winter invites us to layer up not only in clothing but also in our meditation practice. Consider adding a cosy blanket or cardigan to your meditation space, creating a physical cocoon that mirrors the inner warmth and calm you seek. They can also provide security and deepen your practice. Using a meditation cushion can also help deepen and aid practice by helping you sit more comfortably and making you feel more grounded. Perhaps you could also light a candle to guide and focus, or use aromatherapy oils to uplift, calm and ground. Or perhaps gather some seasonal Winter objects from nature. Such as pine cones, eucalyptus or holly. You could even create a seasonal aroma with orange slices and cloves. Or use an aromatherapy scent, designed for meditative practice. I often create a seasonal circle for classes/ personal meditation and I profoundly believe this enhances my connection to nature and allows me to ground myself and connect deeply. I also find using fairy lights if there is limited natural light, a beautiful way to create an atmosphere perfect for meditation. There are many ways in which you can create a unique, seasonal space to suit and embrace your individuality.
5- Create a Winter Meditation Playlist
I sometimes meditate in silence, just allowing background noise to just be. This was a challenge at times, but something I have learnt to co-exist with as my practice has deepened. Other times, I may consider having some background music playing to enhance my practice. You could consider creating a playlist that resonates with the tranquillity of the season. Think soft instrumental melodies, gentle nature sounds, or even your favourite calming tunes. Let the music become a seamless part of your meditation journey and create a beautiful practice.
6- Winter’s Lessons on Impermanence
Winter, much like life’s seasons, teaches us the beauty of impermanence in life and in nature. Embrace the ebb and flow of both Winter and life, finding calm in the knowledge that challenges, like Winter storms, are temporary and we can lean into any changes with surrender and acceptance. Often, we have no control over life’s ups and downs, so it can be hugely beneficial to learn to flow with any changes.
7- Harness Natural Light
Maximise your exposure to natural light during the shorter winter days. Meditate near a sunlit window if possible to enjoy the natural warmth and glow of the sun whilst topping up vitamin D levels safely. Embrace the Winter sunlight, and let it be a gentle guide towards better sleep and general well-being. Try to expose yourself to natural light in the mornings to help with waking. Morning can also be a perfect time to build a meditation habit. This can be a short 5 minutes (or less!) practice at first, the most important thing being to build a consistent habit.
8- Warm drinks for Winter meditation and mindful moments
Wrap your hands around a warm cup of tea or hot cacao during meditation. The sensation of warmth can anchor you in the present moment, creating a comforting ritual that enhances the overall sense of calm. You can then embrace being in the present by observing the relaxing pattern of your warm drink whilst you stir, taking some deep breaths and really taking notice of the aroma.
9- Winter walking meditation
I adore walking meditation, there are many ways in which to incorporate meditation and mindfulness effectively with walking. In the enchanting hush of Winter, walking can become a meditative journey through a serene landscape adorned in nature’s frosty beauty. Each step, cushioned by the soft fallen leaves and frosty ground, resonates with a rhythmic harmony that synchronises with the quietude around. As I navigate Winter walks, I notice crisp air filling my lungs, awakening a sense of connection to this present moment. The frosty branches overhead create a gentle canopy, inviting contemplation and inner reflection. Winter walking meditation becomes a tranquil dance, where the world’s stillness mirrors the calm unfolding within, fostering a profound connection with the season’s beauty and the tranquillity nestled in each step. I find walking meditations also help me to recognise the healing power of nature, and I often notice healing details during walks which allow me to focus gratitude and ground.
10- Use an affirmation
Affirmations, when seamlessly woven into meditation, can deepen and enhance the transformative potential of your meditative practice. If you have ever been to one of my classes, you know I like to use an affirmation. My most commonly used affirmation is to inhale… I surrender to calm, and to exhale… I am letting go. I find the simplicity of this affirmation to be incredibly powerful and effective. You can use any affirmation you wish during Winter meditation, you could create one of your own. Or here is an example of a Winter affirmation I like to use. I inhale… I slow down and create inner peace, and I exhale… I release the past with gratitude. It can be fun to play around finding a personal affirmation to use, and it can be incredibly effective!
I hope these tips have been of some use to you, it would be lovely to hear any Winter meditation tips you have found so please feel free to share. I will always welcome any new learnings with gratitude.
